Land Use
Welcome
|
The
2001 Michigan Land Resource Project study projected that if current land
use patterns continue, by 2040 Michigan's built or developed areas will
constitute 17 percent of our land, compared to the present 9 percent. At
the same time, population is decreasing, especially in our urban areas,
leaving behind declining property values, concentration of poverty, shrinking
tax base, and deterioration of basic services.
The Land Use implementation workgroup is focusing on land use strategies
that help enhance affordability in a community. Or, from a slightly different
direction, the workgroup is promoting development in ways that include affordable
housing in balance with all other necessary land uses. Placing housing and
jobs in close proximity, increasing urban density, and regional collaboration
and innovative regulatory approaches are only a few of the topics that are
being examined. |
